Zeke parked his car at the indoor soccer facility and thanked his lucky stars they’d been shining on him today. Which was, after all, a miracle of epic proportions, since he was all but convinced his luck had long run out. The horrible howler incident a few years back had taught him to never again give luck that much power over his life. He knew hard work and determination weren’t the only things that had earned him his position as a professional goalkeeper, and then, when the luck ran out, that reward was snatched away from him in one excruciating game. Older and wiser now, Zeke relied on hard work and determination and didn’t expect luck to wave her wand over him or his dreams.

Which was why running into Kendall at the final inspection was a complete surprise and an opportunity he was thrilled he’d grabbed on to. In a town their size with its growth rate nearly out of control, the city had several building inspectors on staff, so the likelihood of drawing Kendall on the day he would be prepping for the final walk-through . . . well, that was even less than the odds of her team drawing him as the center referee for half of their games consecutively.

Telling Kendall it was beneficial for developing players to watch soccer of all levels wasn’t a lie; it was fact. Zeke saw so much potential in Drew, it would be a shame not to at least try to inspire him to work hard. That Zeke wanted to invite Kendall for other reasons was immaterial.

The churning of the gravel under his feet as he walked felt like the nerves Zeke had in his stomach. He hadn’t been this nervous for a soccer match since his final pro game. The possibility that Kendall might show brought all the uncertainty and anxiety rushing back.

“Hey, Raz.” Zeke fist-bumped his teammate standing in line to check in. The chalkboard at the check-in desk had their team, Nothing But Net, going up against Hat Tricks, a name that had left a scar the last time the teams had faced off.

After checking in, Zeke and Raz made their way around the crowd of people between check-in and the bleachers. Several of both teams’ players had arrived before Zeke, some stretching and taking all of this seriously, others standing around joking, thinking they could jog onto the field and play a full game at top speed. Since it
